Discovery

Lyon tourist capital

Updating : 27/10/2005

Lyon has this amazing thing that even those who are used to living and working there, fall under the charm of the authentic change of scenery as soon as they get lost, intentionally, in Vieux Lyon's alleyways and in all the tourist places of the town. So imagine all those who benefit from the formula Week-End: Lyon Discovery and a tour in a double-decker bus!

It is all year long that you can spend time discovering a town and its resources, above all when it is a large-scale regional capital. In Lyon, autumn is particularly welcome when wandering in the country becomes less likely and less attractive than in the summer months.

And even more since it is the start of the new theatre period and of the main autumn exhibitions in the museums.

This is what the Lyon City Card proposes and which is an integral part of the formula. It enables the discovery of the city and its resources in two days. The guided tours (absolutely necessary in Vieux Lyon!), concerts, shopping in Lyon's Golden Triangle close to Place Bellecour where the most prestigious brands such as Cartier, Vuitton, Dior, Hermès are represented besides other brands, perhaps less known for the time being but which will not be long in making a name for themselves. Moreover you will benefit from discovering young stylists and designers from Lyon, whose influence is increasing in fashion milieus.

And to also admire exhibitions such as the ones of Braque and Laurens in the Musée des Beaux Arts, Stone Dream at the Museum, Lugdunum, Birth of a Capital in the great Musée Gallo Romain or even all the events of the Biennial Contemporary Art exhibition.

The theatre week end proposes an evening at the Célestins theatre on Sunday evening to see the play "Monsieur Chasse" of Feydeau early November.

In every case, lunch in a traditional Lyon restaurant is included and you leave with a gourmet souvenir offered by Voisin, famous chocolate maker in Lyon.

To discover Lyon in an even more perfect way, you can also do the Big Tour aboard a double-decker bus. The formula has been tried in many European Capitals and mainly in Paris and is now possible in Lyon since the beginning of summer. The tour lasts between 1¼ and 1½ hours, but much more if you fully profit from it; since you can get off and on again at each of the 9 stops on a 15 kilometre tour of the town and, each time, take your time to visit.

Comments in 6 different languages make it possible to learn all the secrets of the town thanks to a headphone system.  Lyon's inhabitants can also take advantage of it, on the occasion for instance of a family trip to learn more about their own town.
