When the train of la Mure takes mountain bikes on board

Updating : 03/07/2006

It is also called the most beautiful railway of the Alpes, the « Chemin de Fer de la Mure », which climbs up the mountain between the cliffs of the Vercors and the Oisans ranges, opens the access to the plateau of Matheysine like a charming cable car. You go up on a train and you go down on a mountain bike, for instance, since it even takes bicycles on board...

Wagon Vélos - Chemin de fer de la Mure

In times gone by, the Chemin de Fer de la Mure was used for coal extraction. It carried coal to Grenoble until the end of the 19th century.

It then became, at La Mure railway station, the star attraction itself with a 1h45 trip on the Cliffside ride between Vercors and Oisans. But since this summer, initiatives, possibilities and animations around this train of legend have been multiplied.

It is the whole Matheysine Mountain, its roads and pathways of every level, which is quite rare in the Isère department - which is now very accessible for both amateurs of soft slopes and big thrills, like the famous «Pointe Percée», for example, one of the seven marvels of the Dauphiné.

But above all you should try the train+bicycle formula. To be consumed without moderation... All the more so since this kind of hike is accessible to all, young enthusiasts of sensational experiences, as well as families with children. Mountain bikes are loaded and strongly lashed down in the appropriate wagon and then, arriving on top, you can choose between two possibilities.

Either, for the most experienced, undertake the descent through the itinerary of Lake Pierre Chatel and Lake Pétichet, with a stop at the belvedere Olivier Messiaen and its astonishing view on the lake of Laffrey.

Or, calmly strolling along roads and pathways, with picnic and bathing in the pure waters of lakes, discovering at the same time the industrial heritage of the Isère department, along with tasting-sessions of caillette, murçon (a sausage with a strong taste...), meat pies and bouffette.

At the end of the day, you put the bikes back on board the train and you can let yourselves admire the beauty of the landscapes. When can we do it again?
