Week-end in Chambéry : To take advantage of the Ducs de Savoie capital

Updating : 15/09/2005

Chambéry is a real regional capital. It directs mountain lovers towards the Tarentaise, the Maurienne or even the Val d'Arly. But it is also worth a stop for an all-inclusive week-end baptized "Terroir et Patrimoine" (soil and heritage) allowing you to discover the ducal city, the old town, its bells or even the Maison des Charmettes where Jean Jacques Rousseau lived...

It is a smart and cultural week end. You will be installed at the hôtel des Princes, a charming building well situated in the heart of the subject in the historical centre. The program starts gently, the next morning, with a stroll to the Chambéry market, one of the most beautiful of the area, did you know that? It is a delight, above all during the autumn season, when there are lots of fruits and vegetables, apples, sweet chestnuts, mushrooms, and Savoie pears, all are of very high quality and open the appetite for the rest of the delights.

After you have had lunch in the old town (the choice is up to you), you then meet the guides for the "château des Ducs de Savoie" visit. This is really something since, in times gone by, Savoie was much larger and more prosperous, and that it is still rich in traditions exceeding by far today's frontiers.

With the gastronomic dinner you will profit from the autumn savours and from lots of products from Savoie, along with local wine tasting (at an additional cost) still quite often unknown, if you don't content yourself with the Apremont and the Gamay wines, usually served during winter sports.

Sunday morning is devoted to the visit of a museum of you choice. The « Musée Savoisien » and its historical and artistic heritage from Savoie, the « Musée des Beaux Arts » whose Italian painting collections, from 14th and 17th centuries, are the most important in France after those of the Louvre, or also, the "Musée Jean Jacques Rousseau" in the "Maison des Charmettes" where he lived with Madame de Warens "the most beautiful years of his life".

If you are lucky to stay in Chambéry on the 1st or 3rd Saturday of the month, you will profit from the concert of the bells of the "Grand Carillon" one of the greatest sets of bells in Europe.

These week-ends are proposed until December 31st and make it possible, on Sunday afternoons, to profit from numerous activities such as the « Grande Braderie d'Automne » (stalls selling cut price goods) on september 25th, the Bande Dessinée (cartoons) festival from October 7th to 9th and also among others, from the Christmas Market from December 3rd to 24th.
