Immersion

In the domain of the olive and the olive tree

Updating : 02/02/2006

Anne and Alexandre Buffard explore the whole provençal Drôme country, from within their lovely "mas" (typical south of France house), located in the "Vallée des Nymphes", with local products such as truffles, wild asparagus, honey, lavender, aromatic Provence herbs... In early February, it is the time for the olives and olive oil, and there is a lot to be done!

Everyone from the area will tell you that olive cultivation and exploitation involve a great deal of work, but what a reward you get in return!  The "Tanche de Nyons" olive, like all the other varieties, is uneatable when untreated. It is the Artisan's magic that makes it the little marvel we all know. All in all, it is a gold nugget, a happy marriage between nature and the work of the man.

Since they chose this life in "Nyons" country, Anne and Alexandre have no time to be bored. An escapee from the world of marketing, Anne started cooking, while Alexandre has an artist's disposition, painting with the same source of inspiration as the great painters who took Provence as their model. During the painting courses he sometimes holds, he passes on his know-how with pleasure.

In February, and until the end of March, while mills are producing the new oil, the olive and the olive trees become their passion. They are in a good position to talk about them, since in the "Mas Bella Cortis" there are many olive trees.

As soon as they arrive, clients are given an itinerary which will permit them to savour their week end in the best conditions. There are three valleys to be discovered along the rivers, their names are not ordinary ones: the "Eygues", the "Ouvèze" or the "Ennuyé".

The trip starts at the "Nyons" tourist agency, which is worth a stop for the "Roman" bridge, the alleys of the "des Forts" quarter and for anything to do with olives and the olive trees.

Starting with a visit to the old mills, going on to the olive tree museum, the "Scourtinerie et Vignolis, Coopérative du Nyonsais", you then make for the Dozol-Autrand mill next to the Roman bridge, reputed for its olive oil and winner of several medals.

The trip continues with the "Domaine de la Blachette", a farm where you can buy olive oils and olive cream, and through numerous villages such as : Villeperdrix, Saint May, le Poët-Sigilat, Buis-les-Baronnies, Roche sur Bois, Moullans sur Ouvèze, Piégon, Mirabel-aux-Baronnies, Châteauneuf de Bordette....

This is when you realize that it will take much more than two days to explore all the possibilities, since you are also expected in "Mas Bella Cortis" to have dinner at the "table d'hôtes" and to savour the aperitif served with olives, olive oil and "tapenade" toasts (provençal condiment made of black olives mixed with ground anchovies and capers), a "roquette" and scallops salad, cod served with "rates" (delicious little potatoes) and olive oil of great vintage, goat cheese with olive oil, a pan full of honey fried mangoes. All of this washed down with a "Tricastin" wine. Pure heaven...
